About OnlyTheHobo

A digital museum of American hobo culture.

OnlyTheHobo is an independent online museum devoted to the history of migratory workers who rode North American freights, the culture nicknamed hobohemia, and the folklore that grew around both.

Keeping the culture alive. We build this museum so American hobo history stays findable: verified stories, public-domain memoirs, rights-cleared photographs, nickels and tramp art, IWW songbooks, Britt’s continuing gathering, and the painful chapters—vagrancy law, Scottsboro, Depression youth—that belong in the same building. Preservation here means accuracy, credit, and a clear refusal to turn curiosity into a how-to for illegal boarding.

What we aim for

What this is not

This site does not teach or encourage illegal freighthopping. Historical description is not instruction. Railroad trespass remains dangerous and unlawful.

How the redesign was done

The first public draft mixed solid themes with unverified anecdotes and a playful visual style. This redesign keeps the mission—a thorough museum of hobo history and culture—while replacing the look with a restrained archival design and rewriting the galleries against published sources.
